True Wisdom

The Value of Wisdom

Why are we told to get wisdom?

Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7.

Note – Wisdom implies the ability to judge soundly and deal sagaciously. It is knowledge, with the capacity to make due use of it. One may have abundance of knowledge and at the same time possess little wisdom.

Of how much value is wisdom?

“She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.”

 Proverbs 3:15. [Wisdom]

The Source of Wisdom

Who gives wisdom?

For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.”

Proverbs 2:6.

How may it be obtained?

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5.

When Solomon became king, what did he ask the Lord to give him?

“Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 2 Chronicles 1:10.

How did the Lord regard this request?

“And the Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.” 1 Kings 3:10.

How was Solomon’s prayer answered?

“So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for a long life or wealth for yourself, nor asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise a discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for – both riches and honor – so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.” Verses 11-13.

What is the beginning of wisdom?

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.” Psalm 111:10.

By what means was the psalmist made wiser than his enemies?

Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me.”

 Psalm 119:98

Why did his understanding excel that of his teachers?

“I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.” Verse 99.

The Effects of Wisdom

What blessings follow the acquisition of wisdom?

“Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor.”

Proverbs 4:8,9.

What effect does wisdom have upon the countenance?

“Who is like the wise man? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a man’s face and changes its hard appearance.” Ecclesiastes 8:1.

Are great men always wise?

It is not only the old who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right.”

Job 32:9.

Two Kinds of Wisdom

In what did Christ say the children of this world excel the children of light?

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.” Luke 16:8.

In what did the apostle say he would have us wise, and in what sample?

“Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.” Romans 16:19.

How many kinds of wisdom are there?

“We do, however speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.” 1 Corinthians 2:6,7.

How does God regard worldly wisdom?

“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness.” 1 Corinthians 3:19.

What is the character of that wisdom which comes from God?

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” James 3:17.

What wisdom are the Scriptures able to give?

“And how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:15.
